Why Does Jet Lag Happen?

Jet lag happens because your internal body clock resets slowly – only about an hour a day – while a plane crosses time zones in hours. On arrival, your clock is still on home time, so it releases sleep and wake signals at the wrong local moments. It takes several days of local light and routine to drag the clock into line, and that lag is what you feel.

Why does crossing time zones confuse the body?

Your body runs on an internal schedule kept by a master clock in the brain. That clock decides when you get sleepy, when hormones rise and fall, and when your body temperature dips – all timed to the light and dark of wherever you have been living. When you fly across several time zones, the outside world’s clock jumps by hours in a single trip, but your internal clock does not jump with it. For a while, your body keeps insisting it is the middle of the night when the destination says mid-morning, or that it is afternoon when locals are going to bed. Why does the body clock reset so slowly?

The clock is deliberately stable – you would not want it lurching around every time a cloud passed. It adjusts to new time cues, called zeitgebers, only gradually, typically by around an hour per day. The most powerful of these cues is light: bright light reaching the eye tells the master clock what time it “really” is and nudges it a little each day. After a six-hour shift, that means roughly six days of nudging before the clock fully catches up, unless you actively help it along. Why is flying east worse than flying west?

This is one of the most reliable facts about jet lag, and it comes down to the shape of the human clock. Left to itself, the human circadian clock runs slightly longer than 24 hours – on average about 24.2 hours (Czeisler and colleagues, 1999). That means our bodies find it naturally easier to delay – to stretch the day later – than to advance it earlier.

Flying west asks you to delay your clock (stay up later, wake later), which matches its natural tendency, so it usually adjusts faster. What is actually out of sync inside the body?

It is not just “feeling tired.” The whole orchestra of the body clock is misaligned at once: the night-time rise of melatonin, the morning surge of cortisol, the daily swing in core body temperature, digestive timing, and the sleep-wake signal itself are all still keeping home time. Because these systems each reset at their own pace, you can feel wide awake at 3 a.m. and foggy at noon during the same day. How can I make the clock reset faster?

Since light drives the reset, controlling it is the strongest lever. Does the number of time zones or the flight length matter more?

The number of time zones crossed is what drives jet lag. A long flight that stays in one time zone causes travel fatigue but little true jet lag, while a shorter flight across many zones can cause significant jet lag.

Why do I sometimes not feel jet lagged going west?

Because delaying the clock matches its natural tendency to run slightly longer than 24 hours, westward adjustment is often easier and quicker, so mild westward trips can feel much less disruptive than the same shift eastward.

Is jet lag just dehydration from flying?

No. Dehydration and cabin conditions cause travel fatigue, which rest and fluids fix. Jet lag is caused specifically by the time-zone shift and persists until your body clock realigns.

Can I reset my clock before I fly?
