How does the flight sleep calculator work?
The single most useful rule for a long flight is: sleep when it is night at your destination, stay awake when it is day there. This tool takes your departure time and estimated flight duration, projects the destination’s local night onto the flight, and marks the stretch of the flight that overlaps it as your sleep window – with the rest flagged as time to stay awake, hydrate and move. Because the same clock hour is a different time in two places, every window is shown in both home and destination time to remove the guesswork.

On a short overnight hop there may be too little overlap to get real sleep, and the honest answer is sometimes “you will not sleep much – protect the first evening on the ground instead.” The calculator will show you when that is the case.
Should I sleep on an eastbound overnight flight?
Usually yes. Eastward long-hauls (for example Europe to Asia) often depart in the evening and land in the morning, and getting a solid block of sleep early in the flight – timed to destination night – means you arrive closer to the local schedule. On westbound flights the opposite is often true: staying awake and sleeping only late helps you push your bedtime later, which is the direction a westward trip needs. Caffeine late in a flight can wreck a sleep window you actually need, so time it to your “stay awake” stretch, not your “sleep” stretch. What if the flight is too short to sleep properly?
The calculator will show a small or no overlap with destination night. In that case, treat the flight as a rest-and-hydrate leg and focus your effort on the first evening and morning at the destination instead.
Should I stay on home time or switch to destination time?
For trips longer than a couple of days, switch to destination time as soon as you board – set your watch, and eat and sleep on the new schedule. That is exactly what these windows help you do.
Does this replace a full plan?
