This time difference calculator shows the exact gap between any two cities to the minute. Pick an origin and a destination and it reads live IANA time-zone data – including daylight saving and half-hour zones – to tell you how many hours ahead or behind your destination is, both current local times, and whether the trip crosses the international date line.

How does the time difference calculator work?

It does not use fixed offsets. Every result is computed from the IANA time-zone database (the same standard operating systems use), applied to a specific moment in time. That matters because a city’s offset is not constant: it changes when the country switches to or from daylight saving time. So the calculator resolves each city’s real UTC offset for the instant you are asking about, then subtracts one from the other.

The output has three parts: the signed difference (“Tokyo is 7 hours ahead of Frankfurt”), the two current local clocks shown side by side, and a note if the two places sit on opposite sides of the date line. Enter a city name or a three-letter airport code – “Frankfurt” or “FRA” both work.

Which factors does it use?

The gap between two cities is not just “subtract the offsets on a map.” Four real-world details change the answer, and the calculator handles all of them:

Because the difference is tied to a specific date, the answer can shift by an hour around a clock changeover. That is correct, not a bug – the calculator is telling you the real gap for that day.

Is the time difference the same as jet lag?

No. The time difference is a fact about clocks; jet lag is what that gap does to your body. A large time difference makes jet lag more likely and more severe, but two other things matter just as much: the direction of travel (eastward is usually harder) and how many zones you actually cross. Why does the difference sometimes change by an hour?

Because daylight saving time is not synchronised worldwide. The European Union, the United States, and the southern hemisphere each start and end DST on different dates, so for a few weeks each year the “normal” gap between two cities is one hour off. Europe-to-US routes are the classic example: the standard 6-hour Frankfurt-New York gap becomes 5 hours during the transition weeks. The calculator always uses the offset that is actually in force on the date you enter.

What does “crosses the date line” mean for my trip?

The international date line runs roughly down the middle of the Pacific. Cross it going west and you skip a calendar day; cross it going east and you can arrive “before” you left in local terms. It does not change how tired you feel – your body only cares about the number of hours your clock must shift – but it does change the arrival date on your itinerary, which is easy to misread when booking connections. Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator account for daylight saving time?

Yes. It resolves each city’s real offset for the date in question using the IANA time-zone database, so DST (in either hemisphere) is built in. That is why a route can read 5 hours on one date and 6 on another.

Can I enter cities that do not have an airport?

The current dataset resolves about 850 airports by city name or IATA code. A small town without a scheduled airport may not be listed yet; pick the nearest served city in the same time zone and the result is identical.

How accurate is the result?

The time difference itself is exact – it comes from the same time-zone rules your phone uses. Any onward jet-lag figures are transparent estimates, not clinically validated measurements.

Why are half-hour time zones shown in minutes?

Several regions (India, Nepal, parts of Australia and Canada) use offsets that are not a whole number of hours. Rounding them would give the wrong local time, so the calculator keeps the minutes.
